Obviously, Dynamite Entertainment has more sense than Walt Disney Pictures. Disney gave their 2012 adaptation of A Princess of Mars the lack-luster title John Carter, while Dynamite gives their comics exploring the Barsoom series of novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs titles like Warlord of Mars and Dejah Thoris and the Green Men of Mars. You know, titles that might actually make one want to check them out...
The sales pitch for Warlord of Mars:
John Carter desperately searches for the true identity of the tyrant who has dragged Mars into a planet spanning crusade of racial extermination. Although Carter finds a ray of hope among his former enemies, the tyrant is tracking his every move...

And here's a preview of Dejah Thoris and the Green Men of Mars...
Under cover as a slave. Unrecognizable with her hair chopped short. Dejah Thoris goes deeper on a dangerous mission with her secret, brutal force of six Tharks. They make a magnificent seven, but will they all make it out alive? And should they all?
Although the movie John Carter was pretty much panned by critics, almost everyone I know who saw it really enjoyed it. While I can't confirm that critics got it wrong (again) I can say that the movie flopped needlessly by missing its potential audience. Like a lot of people, I wrote off John Carter without watching it. I think a better genre-based title would have helped a lot.
There's no way for me to know for sure, but I bet if Disney had named that movie Warlord of Mars or A Princess of Mars it would have been a hit. So I'm glad Dynamite had the sense to know where their bread should be buttered. Not saying their Barsoom comics are necessarily a "hit", but Warlord of Mars is on issue 33.
Just sayin'...
So anyways, Warlord of Mars #33 by Arvid Nelson and Wagner Reis and Dejah Thoris and the Green Men of Mars #10 by Mark Rahner and Jethro Morales arrive in comic shops today.
Have a nice day!

Samax Amen draws people, places and things for fun and profit. Whenever possible, he makes it awesome. Because you demanded it (well, maybe not YOU, but somebody did), his freestyle comic Spontaneous will be returning this year. He also wants to draw at least 14 album covers in 2014, so click here if you need album art.
