Merula: Arie e Capricci

Tarquinio Merula (1595-1665) was trained in Cremona, and spent some time as far afield as Poland. His style combines relatively dense harmony with an expansive vocal treatment, especially original in its synthesis of vocal & instrumental forms. Merula is one of the few composers of the period to be highly regarded for both his vocal & instrumental music. The items on this recording are taken from the publications Secondo Libro dei Madrigali (Venice, 1633) and Curtio precipitato ed altri Capricii (Venice, 1638).
